How to Test Out New Fonts Before You Buy Them

Nov 17, 2021

I’m not going to lie, when I add up the amount of money I spend on fonts at the end of the year, I’m always surprised by the number. You see, fonts are a weakness and rather than using fonts I have for a new project, I always purchase new ones that fit the brand better than any my library contains. I’m sure other designers can relate.

One thing that’s tricky, though, is making sure the words you’re designing will look good in the font you have in mind! You may love a font but hate the way the letters look when you put it to use. There’s no point in wasting money on fonts that don’t work.

There’s a better way, friend.

Today I’m sharing how I test out fonts on Creative Market. With one simple trick, you can save yourself time and money by seeing if the font will work for your project.

First, go to creativemarket.com, navigate to ‘Fonts’ in the menu bar and choose the style of of font you’re loooking for.

You’ll come to a page with a grid of the fonts available – you’ll be able to see each item but no sample text. In the top right corner above the grid you will see an option to view the fonts as a list – click that icon and your page will bring up a list layout instead of the grid.

Above the section you’ll see a search bar that says ‘Type to try it out’ – and in that box you can type in the text you’re needing to preview. Scroll down to see all of the options, and screenshot your favorites!

I use this trick for every branding project I do so I don’t waste money on fonts that won’t work for the specific words I’m needing. I hope it helps you as well!
